Guardian Speech and Debate Club
Knoxville Area
Debate contact: Pam Cooper
Guardian speech and debate club began in the spring of 2002 as a speech club with a few families involved. In the fall of 2002, we added speech classes, a Lincoln Douglas value debate class and a Team policy debate class.
Guardian Speech and Debate Club will meet on alternating Thursdays and Fridays. The club meets in Maryville at Grace Community Church on Harper Avenue (near the Blount County Library).
We offer three age based speech tracks. Varsity for students ages 13-19, Junior Varsity (JV) for students ages 9-12. We have tentative plans to offer a Junior (JR) track for ages 5-8. Stock Issue Debate is recommended for ages 13- 19; however Congress Debate is open to students as young as 12. In the fall, we will meet weekly for Debate and the Truth Project and *twice a month for Editorial Impromptu and Junior Speech. We will meet once a month for Varsity speech. In the Spring, we will replace the Truth Project with Apologetics training and Mars Hill discussion groups.

Speech and Debate
2009-2010
In Plato’s Republic, potential rulers are actually “guardians” whose strength of character and talents are put at the service of the public good.
For those new to Speech and Debate (or even those wanting a refresher course), CCT offers several events to help equip you and your student!
A Sweet Start: (Our “Kick-Off” event)
“Friday Night Sundaes”
Friday, August 7th 7:00pm-9:00pm
Guardian registration and informational meeting followed by an ice cream social.
A Smart Start: (CCT Workshops)
Thursday, August 13th 5:00pm-8:30pm
Stock Issue Debate
These workshops are designed to educate both parent and student.
The beginning track will offer a general overview of the debate stock issues, basic debate theory, and this year’s resolution.
We have tentative plans to offer an intermediate track that will primarily focus exploring this year’s debate resolution.
Friday, August 14th ( 9:00am-4:00pm)
Speech & Congress Debate
This workshop is geared for parents and students 11 yrs. and older. Because we will only be meeting one time a month for speech, this workshop is mandatory if you are new to CCT speech. We will cover all the fundamentals of all three types of speeches and give you the needed resources to ensure a “right start” in speech.
All workshops and Speech and Debate meetings
are held in Maryville at
